Microphlebectomy

Microphlebectomy (also known as ambulatory phlebectomy) is a minimally-invasive procedure ideally-suited to treat superficial bulging veins that are too large for sclerotherapy. In the course of this treatment, Dr. Omidi will make tiny incisions as small as 1mm to remove an undesirable vein. He will then insert a small phlebectomy hook to extract the vein through the puncture. Only a small section of the vein needs to be eliminated because the remaining portion of the vein will clot off and gradually fade from view.

Performed under a local anesthetic, microphlebectomy typically lasts between 30 minutes to one hour. Due to the small size of punctures, this procedure requires no stitches. The downtime is minimal with most patients being able to resume their daily activities the following day. While you are not likely to experience significant discomfort after microphlebectomy, Dr. Omidi may recommend compression to be used during the first two weeks to control any minor swelling.

In rare cases, microphlebectomy may cause a skin nerve injury. More common side effects include minor bruising and mild discomfort that typically lasts for only a few days following the procedure.
