About Hair Loss Medications
Hair loss medications are oral and topical therapies that slow the effects of hair loss. These treatments can support and stimulate the health of your scalp and hair follicles, all while slowing and combating signs of hair loss at a cellular level.
About Hair Loss
Hair loss is a widespread issue that affects millions of people around the globe. The most common form of hair loss is androgenetic alopecia, also known as male pattern hair loss (MPHL) or female pattern hair loss (FPHL). It is a progressive loss of hair around the scalp, with many patients experiencing thinning or shedding around their frontal hairline, vertex, crown, frontotemporal region, and the top of the head. (1)
Androgenetic alopecia causes an enzyme called 5 alpha-reductase to convert testosterone into dihydrotestosterone (DHT). This hormone then interacts with the hair follicles, causing certain effects such as:
- Shortening the growth phase in the hair cycle
- Shrinking the hair follicles
- Thinner hair growth
- Hair loss
Benefits
There are numerous benefits to starting hair loss medications. Several of them include:
- Non-Invasive Approaches: You do not need to worry about any injections or incisions when starting a hair loss medication.
- Reduced Hair Loss: Each medication is designed to slow the effects of hair loss, helping you maintain your luscious locks.
- Tailored Treatment Plan: Dr. Omidi will personalize each aspect of your regimen according to your needs to ensure the most effective treatment possible.
- No Recovery Time: You will not need to take time away from your career or activities after beginning your medications.
- Elevated Confidence: Restoring the appearance of your hair can help you improve your sense of self-esteem, allowing you to approach each day with a renewed sense of positivity.
Candidates
You may benefit from hair loss medications if you have noticed thinning or shedding hair, as well as a widening part. You may also benefit from this treatment if you have androgenetic alopecia or have noticed signs of hair loss after a stressful event.
To qualify for your treatment, you should be in good general health and maintain realistic expectations regarding your results. Dr. Omidi and his team will assess your candidacy during your consultation. Please understand that you may qualify for certain medications and not others.
Personal Consultation
During your personal consultation, Dr. Omidi will meet with you to establish a deeper relationship and learn how he can help you best. He will review your medical history, including any previous treatments you underwent. He will learn more about your experiences and concerns and establish realistic goals and expectations. He will also perform a thorough assessment of your scalp.
Dr. Omidi will then use this information to finalize your candidacy and create your treatment plan. He will determine which medication will be the most effective, as well as what dosage to start you on. He will also answer any questions you may have about your treatment regimen or hair loss altogether.
If you are ready to start restoring your hair, please contact us online or call (310) 281-0155.
Available Medications
Dr. Omidi offers three different hair loss medications. During your personal consultation, he will work with you to determine which will be the most effective for your scalp.
Finasteride (Propecia)
Finasteride is an oral medication that can effectively reduce the effects of male pattern hair loss in men. It slows the effects of thinning and shedding by inhibiting type II and type III 5-alpha-reductases, thereby decreasing the conversion of testosterone to DHT. (2)
Minoxidil (Rogaine)
Minoxidil is a topical hair loss medication for both men and women that can promote new hair growth. It stimulates multiple metabolic and cellular pathways within the hair follicle to extend the anagen phase, resulting in longer and thicker hair growth. (3) Dr. Omidi offers it as both a foam and a liquid.
PP405
PP405 is a peptide that is applied topically to revitalize dormant hair follicles and stimulate new hair growth. This peptide can block the mitochondrial pyruvate carrier (MPC) cell and create a metabolic shift within it. This shift then chemically signals the dormant hair follicles to enter the anagen phase of the hair cycle. (4)
Recovery and Results
One of the best benefits of hair loss medications is their lack of recovery time. This means that after beginning your regimen, you will be able to continue your daily routine as normal. You may experience some initial side effects, such as scalp irritation, excessive shedding, erectile dysfunction, dizziness, and more. These effects will subside as your body continues to adjust to the medication, and Dr. Omidi will help you manage them.
After several months, you will be able to notice new initial growth in regions that previously experienced hair loss. The new growth will first appear thinner or lighter, but it will gradually become thicker and denser as you continue to take your medication. As your hair continues to grow, you will be able to cut, style, and wear it as you please.
Corresponding Procedures
Dr. Omidi can combine your hair loss medication with another hair restoration treatment to enhance your results. Common and effective pairings include FUE hair transplants, PRP, and PRF. For more information about the other treatments and procedures Dr. Omidi offers, we recommend either reading his blog or contacting us online.
FUE Hair Transplant
Follicular unit extraction (FUE) hair transplants are a type of hair restoration treatment that takes healthy hair follicles from the sides and back of the scalp and transplants them to regions experiencing hair loss. Dr. Omidi first extracts hair follicles with a punch tool then places them in the affected regions. As he places them, he does so in the same pattern as your natural hair growth, allowing you to achieve seamless, full results without any fears or worries about linear scarring.
PRP and PRF
Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) and platelet-rich fibrin (PRF) are concentrated solutions derived from whole blood that can stimulate dormant hair follicles and promote new hair growth. These formulas are rich in growth factors and cytokines that have regenerative and wound-healing properties that can rejuvenate the health and well-being of your scalp and follicles.
The primary difference between PRP and PRF is that PRP is primarily a concentration of platelets, and PRF contains platelets, fibrin, and white blood cells. This makes both their thicknesses and textures different, as well as the rate at which they release cellular components.
Cost of Hair Loss Medications in Los Angeles, California
